Are Polytunnels Waterproof?

Are Polytunnels Waterproof

If you’re thinking about using a polytunnel to grow your own vegetables, you should make sure it’s water-proof. While this is not always possible, there are a few ways you can keep your garden’s polytunnel safe and dry. These include using shaded polytunnel covers, UPVC, and All Weather Tape.

UPVC

You can make sure your UPVC polytunnel is waterproof by selecting the right type of cover for it. The cover material should be waterproof and tear resistant. In addition, doors and windows must be fully sealed.

All Weather Tape

All Weather Tape is a waterproof splicing and reinforcement tape suitable for a variety of uses. Its waterproof properties make it the perfect choice for fixing polytunnels and other horticultural PVC structures. Moreover, it has UV resistance and can withstand the elements.

Shaded polytunnel covers

Shaded polytunnel covers can be used to protect crops and plants from harsh weather. The lightweight, polypropylene material used to construct these structures is waterproof and UV stable. They are also made with sturdy galvanised steel hoops. When not in use, polytunnels can be rolled up for easy access. Metal ratchets secure the covers in place, and they are rust-resistant.

UV protection

In this study, the irradiance of the polytunnels and ambient sunlight were compared. In the shortest wavebands, the polytunnel reduced UVB radiation by the highest degree and the UVA radiation by the lowest. In contrast, the spectral quality was significantly influenced by the climatic conditions, insect nets, and glass.

Cost

Polytunnels are an excellent way to extend the growing season and grow larger crops. These structures are typically pre-assembled for easy installation, and can be fitted with a UV-stabilized polythene cover that will protect crops from harsh weather. The tunnel’s stainless steel frame also offers protection from the elements.

Size

Size is a big consideration when buying a polytunnel. Typically, the length is either fourteen or eighteen feet, although the length can be any length as long as it is in six-foot increments.

Durability

Polytunnels are generally very durable, but they can be damaged and need repairs. To protect your investment, choose a polythene cover that is 720 gauge (180 microns) or higher. This kind of cover is guaranteed to last at least five years, and in some cases, ten years.

Installation

Installing polytunnels can be easy if you follow a few simple steps. First of all, make sure you check the materials list and follow the installation instructions carefully. The plastic covering should be fitted tightly to avoid any gaps. You can also use an anchor plate if your polytunnel is being installed on a windy site.
